If Shami unexpectedly fails to reach the required levels of fitness, Mohammad Siraj and Deepak Chahar will step in. The three ODIs against South Africa over the next seven days will give the selectors an opportunity to see both of them before choosing one. from them.

Siraj and Chahar have been selected in the 16-man squad led by Shikhar Dhawan, who featured in the three-match T20I series. The selectors would have preferred Shami to play in ODIs as well, but it could not happen due to his covid problem.
