The death of Jake Crouthamel, who was 84 years old, was revealed on Monday night.

At Dartmouth, Crouthamel ran for 1,763 yards while playing collegiate football. That held the school record for more than a decade. The Dallas Cowboys, an NFL expansion team, then signed him as their first player.

Crouthamel joined Syracuse as their athletic director when his playing days were over. That was his position from 1978 till 2005.

During his tenure, Crouthamel performed a fantastic job of enhancing Syracuse's athletic department. He is also renowned for inaugurating the Carrier Dome in 1980.

This week, the Crouthamel family has received sympathy from the sports community, which is not surprising.

"Sending condolences and prayers to all who were lucky enough to have known Jake Crouthamel," Mike Tirico said. "He helped build the Dome, the Big East and the foundation of modern SU athletics. Jake hired Hall of Fame coaches and was a friend and mentor for so many of us. May he rest in peace."
